George Wingfield was qualified as a fitter in Reading. He joined the Royal Flying Corps in 1917 and within the year was killed. It was 22 January 1918. He was 23 years old and had already achieved the rank of Sergeant Major.
He is buried at St Catherine’s churchyard, Bearwood. The photo is of George (back second from right) with his parents and siblings.
Family member Michael Ford tells us: “In the 1901 Census, George was 6 years old and living with his parents on King Street in Winnersh, although he was born at East Meon in Hampshire. His father John WINGFIELD was working as a sub-postmaster and cow keeper. His mother was Kate Louisa the daughter of George and Sarah FORD.
Sarah (nee GILES) was George FORD’s second wife and sister to his first wife Mary (nee GILES) and she can be seen on the 1911 above as a widowed mother-in-law to George’s father, John WINGFIELD. George FORD is my great great-grandfather through his first wife Mary. John is shown as a general carrier”.
