Sidney Luker. Died 7th November 1917
Sidney was the son of William and Mary Jane Luker. He was eldest of their 5 children. He was born in Reading and lived there in 1911.
Sidney joined the King’s Own Scottish Borderers, 2nd Battalion. It seems that he had previously served with the Royal Scots Fusiliers. This battalion was a regular one and they served throughout the Great War with many battle honours to their name. Sidney was killed on 7th November 1917, presumably whilst the battalion were in action at the Battle of Passchendaele (3rd Ypres) where so many men were killed. His body was not recovered and his name is commemorated on the Memorial to the Missing at Tyne Cot.
His family’s address is given at the time as being Grove Cottages, Nine Mile Ride, Wokingham, though of course we do not when they moved there or whether Sidney himself ever lived in Wokingham.
