Lovejoy, Albert 1915

Albert Edward Lovejoy. Died 25th September 1915
Albert was born in 1892 in Warfield the son of John and Sarah (nee Maynard) He was the youngest son of 12 children. In 1911 Albert was working as a labourer like his father and elder brothers, the family lived at Buckell House, Binfield.

Albert joined the Royal Berkshire Regiment like so many local men. He served in the 8th Battalion and rose to the rank of Lance Corporal. He was killed during the battalion’s action in the battle of Loos. More Information

His body was not recovered from the battlefield and his name is commemorated on the memorial to the missing there.

Janet Griffin (see below) also tells us: “It looks as though Edward Albert LOVEJOY had two brothers who also lost their lives in the First World War. Besides Ernest George LOVEJOY who died on 6 November 1917, brother Sidney Arthur LOVEJOY also died, on 15 April 1917, only a few months after his marriage to Mary PROUD at the end of 1916”.

“I have just started to research the family of my son-in-law, Peter Luke Lovejoy. With the use of census returns and the BMD Index I very quickly got back to the Warfield area of Berkshire. Pete is the great, great grandson of Henry LOVEJOY who was the brother of John LOVEJOY and uncle of Edward Albert LOVEJOY who is commemorated on the Wokingham Memorial Plaque.

Henry LOVEJOY was born in the first quarter of 1853 at Warfield, Berkshire, the son of John LOVEJOY (c1821-1862) and his wife Jane BOWYER (c1826-1920) who had been married in the third quarter of 1849. Henry married Hannah Maria FARMER (1850-1912) in the third quarter of 1880. Hannah was born in Stoke, St Mary Bourne, Hampshire but by 1871 her parents, Thomas FARMER (c1815-1893) and his wife Maria JEFFERY (c1819-1897), had moved their family to Reading where they were living at 3 Ivy Court. Henry and Hannah and their family lived for some time in Warfield, then by 1911 they were living at Plough Lane, Wokingham.

John LOVEJOY (senior) died in 1862 and his widow Jane (nee BOWYER) married Thomas GILES in Reading in 1871. Unfortunately she was a widow again by the time of the 1881 census.

It looks as though Edward Albert LOVEJOY had two brothers who also lost their lives in the First World War. Besides Ernest George LOVEJOY who died on 6 November 1917, brother Sidney Arthur LOVEJOY also died, on 15 April 1917, only a few months after his marriage to Mary PROUD at the end of 1916.
