The late Lieut. F De Vere B Allfrey, 9th Lancers, Ashridgewood, Wokingham. Killed in action.   Aged 22.

Frederick B. De Vere Allfrey. Died 7th Sept 1914

Son of Frederick and Maud, of Ashridgewood, Wokingham. Born 21 September 1891, Frederick had a sister Vera Maud who was born about 1890. The family must have a wealthy one for in 1911 they had 7 staff living at Ashridge.

He was a regular Army Officer and in 1911 was a 2nd Lieutenant, stationed in Canterbury, Kent. We can suppose that Frederick was involved in this action where he was killed, the regiment’s participation in the final ‘lance on lance’ action of the First World War on 7 September 1914 at Moncel, in which Lieutenant Colonel David Campbell led a charge of two troops of B Squadron and overthrew a squadron of the 1st Guard Dragoons. http://twgpp.org/information.php?id=2970925.

Local historian, Jim Bell provides the following newspaper extract: ‘Sept 1914. Lt. Frederick de Vere Allfrey, 9th Lancers, only son of Frederick Vere Allfrey and grandson of Mrs Bruce of Arborfield Court, was killed aged 22. He was shot by a wounded German after he had dismounted to extract a lance from a wounded comrade’s leg’.
In April 1915 his grandmother Mrs Bruce of Arborfield Court endowed a bed in Benyon ward at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in his memory.
Mrs Bruce was later to sell Arborfield Court in 1916. Arborfield’s local history society tells the story. The broader Allfrey family were successful in other parts of the country. Nick Kingsley tells the story.
