Oliver Rance Died 19 May 1917
Oliver was born in 1897 in Chobham, Surrey to father Robert and mother Sophia. He was the last born and had twelve siblings, eight brothers and four sisters. It is probable that Sophia had a first marriage as in the 1911 Census, there is a 36 year old son (Robert) only 16 years younger than Sophia and six years younger than Robert senior. By the 1911 census, Oliver had become a scholar and he lived with his parents at “The Folly,” Lightwater, Bagshot, Camberley, Surrey.
Oliver joined the Queen’s (Royal West Surrey Regiment) 1st /5th Battalion around 1916 and was soon on his way to France. By 1917 he had been killed in Mesopotamia and is buried in Basra War Cemetery. Mesopotamia is now present day Iraq.
