Harry Chivers. Died 5 December 1916
Harry was born in Colnbrook the son of William and Emily in about 1891. He was one of their 7 children.
In 1911 they lived at Kimberely cottages, Seaford Road, Wokingham though Harry was by then a groom at Westcourt, Finchampstead ( currently REME officers mess). By 1914 he had progressed to being a groom at Easthampstead park one of the estates owned by the Marquis of Downshire.

Much sympathy is felt for Mr. and Mrs. W. Chivers, Seaford Road, in the great loss they have sustained in the death of their second son, Sergeant Harry Chivers, Royal Berkshire Regiment, who was killed whilst in the front line trenches. The news was conveyed to his parents in a sympathetic letter from the Company Quartermaster Sergeant, a personal friend of the deceased, in which he says: “It is with deepest sympathy and regret that I am writing to tell you of the accident to your son. Last night, in the front-line trench, he was doing his trench duty as a soldier and a man, as he always did, when he was struck by a small shell, and passed away without saying a word to anyone. His death was instantaneous, and he was laid to rest in our own little cemetery today, with full military honours. His genial disposition won for him the love of all who knew him, and his loss has cast a deep shadow over the whole of the company. His comrades one and all mourn with you in your very great trouble. He was my true friend, and I knew him at home before the war, when I was employed at Mr. W.H. Palmer’s. Had he been my brother I could not have felt his loss more deeply.” Before the war Sergeant H. Chivers was second groom to the Marquis of Downshire. He has two brothers serving.
